SMS SIEMAG

Gazi Metal orders a new cold rolling complex from Siemag

Gazi Meral (Gazi Metal Mamulleri), Turkey, has placed an order with SMS Siemag, Germany, for the supply of a new production facility for cold strip. As of 2013, cold strip made of carbon steel and silicon steel will be produced at an overall capacity of initially 350,000 t/a near the town of Karasu in Turkey. In  the first construction stage, a semi-continuous pickling line with an attached acid regeneration plant , a CVC plus six-high reversing cold mill as well as a skin-pass mill of four-high design will be erected for the new cold rolling complex. With the finished strip, Gazi Metal will also supply the automotive industry and manufactutrers of household equipment.

In addition to all important mechanical components for the mills, SMS Siemag’s supply scope also includes the drive engineering and automation. In the second construction stage, for which all preconditions have already been created in the mill design during the first construction stage, the annual production is to be subsequently increased to 700,000 t and the mills will also be producing tinplate.

The semi-continuous pickling line is designed in such a way that way that the process can be continuously operated with at least 30 m/min. The maximum speed in the process section is 100m/min, whereas in the  entry and exit sections 120m /min can be attained. Strips of widths ranging from 600 to 1,550 mm and gages of 1.5 to 6.0 mm are processed here. In the second stage, the line will be converted to a fully-continuous pickling line.

SMS Siemag Process Technologies GmbH, Austria, will be supplying a fluidized-bed acid regeneration plant which treats 1,700 l/h of hydrochloric acid from the pickling process, thus accounting for the entire acid throughput of the pickling line. The acid regeneration plant capacity will be increased to 3,400 l/h in the second phase and all necessary measures are considered from the beginning.

The single-stand reversing cold mill of six-high design rolls a wide range of products. The carbon steel strips with widths up to 1,500 mm are rolled to final gages of up to 0.25 mm and the strips made of non-grain-oriented silicon steel are rolled to final gages of up to 0.27 mm. The maximum rolling speed is 1,200 m/min.

In order to set the desired strip properties for further processing, all cold rolled strips are rolled in the single-stand skin-pass mill at a maximum rolling speed of 1,000 m/min. The skin-pass mill is designed as a four-high mill and processes strips with widths ranging from 600 to 1,500 mm and gages from 0.25 to 3.0 mm. In the second stage, with the addition of a second stand, the skin-pass mill will be able to process strips with gages down to 0.16 mm and in Double Cold Reduction (DCR) mode down to 0.12 mm.
