Wholesale Price Indices for Primary Articles and Fuel, Power, Light & Lubricants in India (Base: 1993- 94=100)


Review for the week ended 13th March, 2010 (22 Phalguna, 1931, 1926 Saka)

The WPI for the week ended 13th March, 2010 in respect of ‘Primary Articles and ‘Fuel, Power, Light & Lubricants’ is given below:


PRIMARY ARTICLES (Weight 22.02%)
The WPI for the week ended 13th March, 2010 rose by 0.1 percent to 282.3 (Provisional) from 282.1 (Provisional) for the previous week.

The annual rate of inflation, calculated on point to point basis, stood at 13.88 percent(Provisional) for the week ended 13/03/2010 (over 14/03/2009) as compared to 14.16 percent (Provisional) for the previous week (ended 06/03/2010) and 4.91 percent during the corresponding week (ended 14/03/2009) of the previous year.


The groups and items for which the index showed variations during the week are as follows:-
The index for 'Food Articles' group rose by 0.1 percent to 283.0 (Provisional) from 282.6 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of moong and pork (5% each), urad (4%), coffee (2%) and fruits & vegetables (1%). However, the prices of masur (4%) and eggs, bajra, condiments & spices and maize (1 % each) declined.

The index for 'Non-Food Articles' group declined by 0.2 percent to 254.6 (Provisional) from 255.0 (Provisional) for the previous week due to lower prices of hides (raw) (15%), niger seed (5%), tobacco (3 %), raw silk (2%) and fodder, rape & mustard seed, copra, groundnut seed and gingelly seed (1% each).

However, the prices of skins (raw) (10%), tanning materials (4%), raw jute (3%), raw rubber (2%) and raw cotton (1%) moved up.

FUEL, POWER, LIGHT & LUBRICANTS (Weight 14.23%)

The index for this major group remained unchanged at its previous week's level of 361.7 (Provisional). The annual rate of inflation, calculated on point to point basis remained unchanged at its previous week’s level of 12.68 percent (Provisional) and was (-)6.06 percent during the corresponding week (ended 14/03/2009) of the previous year.
