Wholesale Prices for Primary Articles and Fuel, Power, Light & Lubricants in India (Base: 1993-94=100)

Review for the week ended 9th January, 2010

 

The WPI for the week ended 9th January, 2010 in respect of ‘Primary Articles’ and  ‘Fuel, Power, Light & Lubricants’ is given below:

 

PRIMARY ARTICLES (Weight 22.02%):

 

The WPI for the week ended 9th January, 2010 rose by 0.4 percent to 284.6 (Provisional) from 283.4 (Provisional) for the previous week.

 

The annual rate of inflation, calculated on point to point basis, stood at 13.93 percent (Provisional) for the week ended 09/01/2010 (over 10/01/2009) as compared to 13.82 percent (Provisional) for the previous week (ended 02/01/2010) and 11.87 percent during the corresponding week (ended 10/01/2009) of the previous year.

 

The groups and items for which the index showed variations during the week are as follows:-

 

The index for 'Food Articles' group declined by 0.1 percent to 285.6 (Provisional) from 285.8 (Provisional) for the previous week due to lower prices of bajra (4%), tea (3%), maize (2%) and arhar and fruits & vegetables (1% each).  However, the prices of jowar and gram (2% each) and wheat and barley (1% each) moved up.

 

The index for 'Non-Food Articles' group rose by 1.9 percent to 257.9 (Provisional) from 253.2 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of soyabean (13%), niger seed (5%) and groundnut seed, sugarcane and fodder (2% each).  However, the prices of castor seed and linseed (1% each) declined.

 

FUEL, POWER, LIGHT & LUBRICANTS (Weight 14.23%)

 

The index for this major group rose by 0.1 percent to 350.4 (Provisional) from 350.1 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of naphtha (1%).  However, the prices of light diesel oil (1%) declined.

 

The annual rate of inflation, calculated on point to point basis stood at 6.34 percent (Provisional) for the week ended 09/01/2010 over 10/01/2009 as compared to 6.25 percent (Provisional) for the previous week (ended 02/01/2010) and (-) 1.41 percent during the corresponding week (ended 10/01/2009) of the previous year.
