IFPRI Names Shenggen Fan as New Director General

Washington, D.C.—On December 15, Shenggen Fan will take office as the new director general of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), succeeding Joachim von Braun, who led the institute for seven years. Fan joined IFPRI almost 15 years ago as a research fellow. In 2005, he became director of the institute’s Development Strategy and Governance Division, which has grown considerably in size and scope under his leadership. This division has strengthened the capacity of several developing countries to formulate national strategies to reduce hunger and poverty.

Fan also served as director of the International Center for Agricultural and Rural Development at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and is an Executive Committee member of the International Association of Agricultural Economists.

Joachim von Braun will return to the Center for Development Research (ZEF)—Germany’s largest development research institute—at the University of Bonn.
