IFGL Refractories Indigenously manufactured Orbital Implants in India

IFGL Refractories Limited (IFGL) has set up a modern facility for the manufacture of Bio Ceramics in which Orbital Implants based on synthetic porous Hydroxyapatite material are also manufactured, These are marketed under the trade name CeraEye.

CeraEye manufactured as per the Patented technology (Indian Patent no. 197588) developed by Central Glass & Research Institute, Kolkata (CGCRI) is regularly being used by reputed eye surgeons and leading eye hospitals like Sankara Nethralaya, Disha Eye Hospitals & Research Centre, Sankardeva Nethralaya, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Arvind Eye Hospitals, Regional Institute of Opthalmology, Medical College, Peerless Hospitals, Rotary Narayan Nethralaya, Susrut Eye Foundation & Research Centre, Wockhardt Eye Hospitals, R G Kar Medical College etc in India.

CeraEye, as a hydroxyapatite based ocular implant, substitutes lost natural eye ball either due to disease / accident or otherwise. Since CeraEye is based on Hydroxyapatite material and is engineered to be 75% porous with pore sizes ranging from 100 to 300 microns, it provides for vascularisation. As a result, within six months of surgery, tissues and blood vessels encompass it and thus enable good movement. Structure of porous model permits fibro vascular growth into the prosthetic facilitating stability within the eye socket.

The clinical performance of CeraEye Orbital implants which are far better than the available ones made of materials such as metal, glass, polymer etc which have been found to be not only incompatible with the host but also static. The clinical study also confirms that socket remains very healthy even after a long period of post operative study and subsequently it gives a better implant and prosthesis motility is very good in this case. Salient features of CeraEye are:

• Ceramic matrix acting as a medium for soft tissue ingrowths.
• Light in weight
• Simple design
• Smaller than an eye ball
• Centered within muscle cone
• Integration to EO muscle
• Anchored to orbital tissue
• Resists migration and provides permanent stability
• High strength and can be drilled for fitting of motility peg
• Provides much more movement than conventional prosthesis
• Incidence of lower lid sagging is minimized

CeraEye is produced under processes having ISO 9001: 2000 and CE (CE 1023) Certifications. It is available in sizes from 12 mm to 20 mm, both in spherical/conoid design. The conoid design is in plain model and drilled hole model for evisceration/enucleation purpose. Implants are supplied in special air tight plastic containers after Gamma Ray sterilization treatment and is marketed by IFGL Bio Ceramics Limited
